Where I Am From

What thoughts were you having as you assembled the words and or images for your Where I Am From creation?

What thoughts can you share about how you might use this activity in your work with students at your age/grade/subject level?

  2. I really liked doing this assignment. It forced me to reflect on my upbringing and why I've chosen the career path of counseling. It's also a good community building activity for this class. Even though we are studying different trades, we will be working together. It's important to realize our similarities and our differences.

I am not sure what grade level I will be working with yet, but I can see how this applies to all grade levels. For high school, I would keep it the same. For middle school aged students, I would alter it a little to make the template more guided. For elementary students, I would invite them to explore their current environments, and bring in pictures that represent it to share with their classmates.

I really enjoyed this assignment. It forced me to really think about my home and family and reflect on my hometown of Morgantown.

I plan on teaching elementary school, so this assignment might be too complex for small children. However, I think it would be interesting to question them about themselves and what they is important about the person that they are. I think for elementary students the questions would have to be more detailed and guided. But I think it would be very interesting to see their thoughts on their environments, families, and activities.

  4. I enjoyed doing this assignment a lot. I was the first time I did any sort of video slideshow and found the process to be easy and fun. showing our projects my small group prompted a lot of conversation and made connections that we may not have otherwise seen.

I think that this kind of activity is a great idea for any age group and can be adapted for younger children to build community and emotional development. Perhaps for early elementary, the teacher could model the activity but extend the media beyond poetry and photographs and show multiple examples to the class to get them thinking and reflecting. Students could the bring in items from their yards, family heirlooms, or even kitchens as examples to show where they are from. I think for younger students a physical objects may be easier to connect to their families than photographs. This process would be very similar to show and tell but would require more critical thinking and self reflection about the students and their families.

  5. One thing I thought about several times while working on this assignment was how different it would be sharing it here in Morgantown as opposed to my undergraduate college located just outside Philadelphia. I was one of two students from West Virginia in my graduating class and most of my classmates were very unfamiliar with the state. I would have had to explain a lot of what I talked about, whereas here, I was a lot more similar to the other students.
I could see using this activity with my middle school/high school students as a get to know you/community builder. I could also adapt the prompt to find out what areas of science students were the most familiar with or enjoyed the most. (I am general science/chemistry) It could also be done within lab groups for them to get to know each other and open up conversations.

  6. As I created my Where I Am From project, I reflected on how I was brought up and how fortunate I am to come from the family and home that I did. Many times, in this profession of school counseling, we hear many stories of hardships, and I thought about how lucky I have been in my life. I thought about how I liked telling my story through pictures because I am a visual learner and it was helpful to put the project together this way. The poem part of the project was difficult for me because of the format. I thought the flow was a little awkward and in my opinion, I could not get what I wanted to say to sound right.

If I were to use this activity in my own work, I could see it being a good opening project for students in a small counseling group. It would create a lot of discussion and be helpful for students getting to know one another. I would want to tweak the project some in order for it to relate more the specific purpose of my group. Also, I would want to change the project some depending on the developmental level. This would be good for a high school group, in my opinion.

  7. I really enjoyed working on this project. Each time I have a project that required me to reflect on my family and my history, I find myself getting really into it and needing to find the best pictures and words that describe my life's experiences. I also like being able to share those pieces of me with others and it allows us to find similarities and differences. This is the kind of project that definitely reminds me how lucky I am and remembering who I am and where I came from is so important in my journey moving forward towards graduation and employment.

I think this assignment could definitely be utilized across the board in the schools. Of course, it would need adjusted to be appropriate for developmental levels. I think this could be a really cool assignment for a class or small group of seniors who are planning/prepping for life post-graduation.

  8. I really enjoyed this assignment. it caused me to do a lot of reflecting that I haven't done in years. being a student that is going through the program an older age than the traditional student, this brought back a lot of memories I hadn't thought of in years. While doing this assignment I looked up many pictures of places I had not thought of in years. many of the shops and things in town that were around as I was growing up are now gone. I personally like the quote of " if you don't know where you've been you can't know where your going".

  10. I really enjoyed this project. I love learning about other people and looking at pictures, it is one of my favorite things to do. I liked the process of putting the powerpoint together. The only thing I had trouble with was deciding which pictures and information to include.

I would like to teach 3rd-5th grade and I think this would be a great project to do with that age group. I like how adaptable this project is. You can get the same result whether you simply write the poem or create a video. I really want to create a sense of community and togetherness in my classroom and I think this would be a great project to do that.

  11. Doing this project was really enjoyable. We have done many similar projects, but never in this format. It was nice to do something unique. Some of the prompts were difficult, as they were so unique. However, it helped get me thinking, which turned out to be the best part. It reminded me of aspects of my life I don't generally think about.

As a counselor, it would be interesting to do this in a different format. It could be difficult, as many students do not have great home lives. This would be important to take into consideration when assigning this. However, if I were running a group with students from good homes, this would be a good way to allow them all to get to know each other so that the environment could become one built on trust and mutual understanding.

  12. The project was okay. I'm conflicted over the sharing personal details on the first meeting aspect and feel I would prefer organic and open conversation to presentations. That said, I can see why something like this is useful in a classroom setting.

The simplicity of the prompt allows for easy reflection. It also can lead to an honest rumination on the origins of ones personality and goals; it works as a exercise in situation.

I didn't follow the template strictly and instead wrote in really loose blank verse. It sounds best when read out loud. As part of the presentation attempted to explain some of the conceit and obscurities.

  14. I enjoyed this assignment because it allowed me to reminisce on memories from my childhood, and it honestly made me a little homesick. I think it was a creative way to get to know one another and to see the similarities, as well as differences, among classmates.

I plan to eventually work at the elementary level, but depending on where I get my first job as a school counselor (could be any level), I would certainly use an activity similar to this. I think it builds a sense of unity and/or community within a classroom.

  15. This assignment was actually quite challenging for me in that my childhood contains a lot of difficult memories and ambitions that for a variety of reasons, never came to be. It was a reminder of the good, fun times, but also a very sobering and difficult reminder of the hurtful, difficult times. I think it is a good exercise for students to use to get to know one another, build some common ground, and develop a general respect for one another. However, as I was reminded, it's wonderful to allow presentation style options, creativity, and freedom so that the students like me who will struggle with this, can do so in a way that is private, non-intrusive, and doesn't end up making students feel like an outsider because their childhood wasn't like all the others.
